David McDonald Focuses on Expansion and Sustainability for OSI Group

David McDonald is the president and Chief Operating Officer of OSI Group LLC, a private food processing company that has locations all over the world. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1987 with a BS in Animal Science and has been at OSI Group since he joined over 30 years ago. McDonald was also previously a chairman of the North America Meat Institute and is now on the board of directors of this organization. He is an independent distributor at Marfrig Global Foods S.A. During his tenure at OSI Group, McDonald has managed to work his way up to the very top of the company, and currently plays a major role in the decisions the company makes.

One such decision is the company’s recent $17 million production expansion in Spain, in response to a growing demand for chicken products in Spain and Portugal. OSI Group serves fast food chains and grocery stores worldwide and has locations in 17 countries. OSI Group also recently acquired Baho Food, with McDonald saying that this acquisition gives OSI Group a broader presence in Europe. Baho Food is a Dutch company that manufactures convenience foods, deli meats, and snacks. It has five subsidiaries – Gelderland Frischwaren, Henri van de Bilt, Vital Convenience, Q Smart Life and Bakx Foods – which serve the customers of 18 countries in Europe.

As OSI Group’s president, David McDonald also focuses on improving the sustainability of the company and its practices. The recent renovation of OSI Group’s Spain location focused on the reduction of energy consumption and waste, and the company as a whole supports animal welfare initiatives and has donated over 200,000 pounds of food to American food banks. McDonald is highly focused on animal welfare, having studied animal science in college, and also finds employee development important. OSI Group also focuses on creating new solutions to fit the changing times, which has made sustainability more important than ever. Customers are caring about traceability and how the animals that are turned into their meat are raised, and local sourcing. McDonald finds it very rewarding to watch the teams that he oversees grow and challenge themselves and appreciates the engagement between new members of the team and existing workers. Finding solutions for his customers has always been exciting for McDonald, and an important part of OSI Group is their innovative solutions and passion for helping customers all over the globe.
